A place of people and boats
The Mo, Sheringham Museum

In the autumn of 1988 Sheringham Town Council set up a Museum Committee with the aim of co-opting interested individuals from the local community. The independent charitable Sheringham Museum Trust was then formed in 1989 and established for the public benefit with the following mission:
• The provision and maintenance of a Museum with the power to acquire and display artefacts relating to the history of Sheringham.
• To educate the public in the geography, history, natural history and architecture of Sheringham and district.
• To secure the preservation, protection, development and improvement of features of historic or public interest in and around Sheringham.
• To promote high standards of planning and architecture in or affecting Sheringham
The creation of the new museum will go a long way towards our educational objectives of working with all sections of the community to encourage an interest in the heritage and culture of Sheringham and developing the partnerships with Sheringham other local schools within the catchment area, to provide information relevant to their curriculum studies.
All of the artefacts in the museum, from lifeboats to fishing boats, picture, photographs, fossils, roman remains and information from the Domesday book will be exhibited in a way that brings history to life.
The museum will use a variety of multi-media exhibits including sound archives to tell the stories of local people and their work on land and sea. Their characters and idiosyncrasies will be recalled in conversations recorded by their desendants.
The museum will feature a number of hands-on exhibits that will allow visitors to get especially close to some of the exhibits and experience for themselves the tools and artefacts of past years.
In the lifeboat exhibition a film projected onto one of the main walls will give a real sense of the rise and fall of the sea and the sounds of waves and weather. This will convey a genuine sense of the conditions endured by the men in the old rowing and sailing lifeboats.
One of the strengths of the town is its musical heritage and the museum will offer a venue for talks and concerts of shanty and other local songs.
